Children don’t come with an instruction manual. However, when you learn to “read your child” they become the instruction manual. My work is to help you learn how to to read your child.

How do I decide how many sessions I need?

Start with a free 30 minute consultation. During this time we will identify issues and concerns, clarify your goals as a parent and develop a plan together to meet your family’s needs.
  • 6 sessions – If your conflict is recent in your relationship, and you have a strong underlying relationship of connection, I recommend 6 sessions to work with the current issues and create a path forward for a strong future.
  • 12 sessions – If you and your teen have an on-going pattern of difficulty in your relationship, 12 sessions gives you to opportunity to make deep and lasting change, to really understand your teenager; why they do the things they do, and act the way they act; this is the opportunity to learn to “read” them.
It takes time to build patterns of conflict and misbehavior and it takes time to change the underlying relational patterns that create those issues. It is important to understand the unmet need behind the misbehavior you are wanting to change. This is the opportunity to address the problem, not just the symptom so you can parent to the need rather than the behavior.

Making the most of our work together

We work with practical skills so that you can immediately begin to effectively deal with your teens’ challenging behavior in a way that builds relationships and connection and reduces conflict and stress. Skills only work if you work with them.
For fastest and best results:

Meet every week for the first 3 – 4 sessions. You need time to work on skills between sessions. Too much time between sessions frequently means skills do not get worked with soon enough or often enough to create the change you are working for.

Practice skills between sessions – until you use the skills you are learning, they are just intellectual information.

Take enough notes between sessions to talk about what skills you worked with and where you need more support.

Mediation and/or Facilitated Conversations

Mediation is helpful for making agreements. Working with mediation, we focus on negotiating agreements, with attention to detail and attending to all of the small but important aspects that can derail agreements. We include time frames and “what if…” back up plans to create usable and successful agreements.
  • Parent Teen Mediation: Mediation/negotiation is especially effective for parents working with their kids. Teens have more “buy in” to the plan when they have felt heard and have a voice in the agreements. Let’s sit down together and mediate agreements with your kids!
  • Parent to Parent Mediation can include:
    • Making agreements about how to effectively parent together
    • Mediated parenting plans
    • How to have productive on-going communication

Facilitated conversations are helpful for building clear communication and understanding with one another. We all tend to run up against old patterns of behavior and response in communication. It is easy for things to get hot fast and fall into old patterns of cyclical arguments that always tend to end the same way; frustration without agreement or understanding. Facilitated conversations help you to step out of these relentless patterns and learn to focus on what is actually important to each person and reach the outcome and understanding you have been hoping for.

Facilitated conversations in conjunction with mediation are effective and appropriate methods for Family counseling and Relationship counseling.
